Faces made of letters and silence
Jaume Plensa is one of the best-known public sculptors working today. Born in Barcelona in 1955, he became famous for large figures and heads that seem to dissolve: crouching bodies made of stainless-steel letters from many alphabets, and elongated faces of young women with closed eyes, carved from alabaster or marble, or cast in bronze and iron.
His breakthrough in the public eye was the Crown Fountain in Chicago's Millennium Park (2004): two glass towers showing video portraits of Chicago residents who, every few minutes, seem to spout water into the pool. Since then, his monumental heads have been installed in cities around the world – among them Dream in St Helens, England (2009).
Plensa's themes are language, identity and the inner life. His sculptures invite people to come close, sit down or walk through them. Because he is a living artist with a primary market in major galleries, auction results show only part of the picture – many works are sold directly.
